for several decades, scientists, naturalists, and concerned citizens around the world have been cautioning people against the careless use, abuse, and rapid disposal of plastics … fortunately, their message has not dissipated in intensity and it is increasingly more far-reaching … however, considering the explosive rate of global population growth, i wonder if the message is becoming diluted or more concentrated among the proliferating minds populating Earth today … more…

confusing terms …

degradable, biodegradable and compostable … they all mean different things … they’re often used interchangeably … however, when you’re dealing with man-made products (e.g., bioplastics) that have been stamped with a claim of being “environmentally friendly”, it is important to understand what means what … some company claims may be deceiving … more…

as litter, plastic bags are especially harmful for wildlife, which may become caught and entangled in whole or torn bags … some animals may also accidentally ingest and suffocate on bags that are mistakenly taken for prey … plastic bags also choke plants, shading them from essential sunlight and sealing them off from the carbon dioxide they respire … keep in mind that plants (and the microorganisms upon which they are dependent) are the vital foundation of almost all ecosystems … more…

this news was a sad surprise:  early last week, the Environment and Plastics Industry Council (EPIC) of Canada issued the results of a study they funded, which showed that reusable cloth bags harbour a plethora of apparently hazardous microorganisms … media reports highlighted the potential danger that bacteria-, yeast-, and mould-infected cloth bags pose to people, especially persons with compromised immune systems and unhealthy digestive tracts who are more susecptible to food poisoning … more…

i love to retreat from the city core to my friend’s farm on the weekend … at the farm, we live with 7 (soon to be 8 ) holstein cows  … they are each such lovely animals, unique in personality and grace …

7 beauties

we live with very minimal use of electricity … surprisingly, it’s a lot easier than i had originally thought … we cook with gas, warm ourselves by the wood stove, and occasionally (albeit rarely) use a generator when we need it … we have an organic garden to grow almost all of the food that we eat throughout the summer … we milk our cows, make yogurt and cheese, and buy eggs from a neighbour … more…

TimBoucher horn of plenty cornucopiathe next time you enter your grocery store, look around … for a few minutes, just soak in the scene and think deeply about what it all means … if you live in a rural area, your grocery store may be a community-based family-owned business … some food may be produced locally and a certain percentage of food and other goods may be imported either domestically or internationally … more…
